Our Story

New London Community Boatworks was founded in 2024 by Ben Ellcome to reconnect New London’s youth with the maritime identity of their city. While New London has a rich seafaring history, many young people today have little opportunity to engage with it in a meaningful or hands-on way.

Ben launched the organization to create those opportunities—using boatbuilding and marine education as tools to develop technical skills, leadership, and community pride. The idea is simple: when students work together to build something real, they also build a deeper sense of connection—to themselves, to their peers, and to their city.

Mission & Values

Mission
To honor New London's maritime heritage by connecting the community to the sea through education, boatbuilding, and pathways into marine trades—fostering pride, place, and purpose for future generations.

Core Values

  • Hands-on Learning – We believe that building with your hands builds confidence, skill, and independence.

  • Community Connection – We create spaces where young people work side-by-side with mentors and peers.

  • Equity in Access – We focus on serving youth who might not otherwise have access to this kind of learning.

  • Respect for Heritage – We carry forward New London’s maritime legacy through active, living tradition.
